Girth

Materials: Found/ altered keys, hand formed steel rings, plexiglass, found camera strap, black tape, steel cable. Dimensions: Circumference 38″, L. 12″.

Concepts of body protection and physical memory were the premise for Girth. Using the traditional form of chain maille armor as a source, I taught myself to create the links from thin gauged steel wire and as I cut the pieces, I saved the unusable ends. These ends were housed in a clear plexiglass purse. I found and altered a few hundred hotel keys and placed five keys on each link which were then arranged in the form of an apron with straps made from steel cable. The final weight of the piece was over 40 pounds.
